Me and my friends were recruited to serve in Babylon by their king. However, we refused to disobey God's laws and eat foods that violated the rules of the Torah. This put us in severe danger, but God delivered us and we were elevated by the King.
Come on, eat it!
Oh Lord, please accept our offering!
Then, my and my friends were pressured to give up our Jewish culture by bowing down to a statue of the Babylonian King. We refused again, and were thrown into a fiery furnace, but again, God delivered us and we were exalted by the king, who now recognised our God as the true God.
Then, a new king was elected and him and his son did not like the Jewish culture, and returned to the Babylonian ways. I then convinced the King in the same way as the previous one, but his son would not listen, and continued to exalt himself above God. Because of this betrayal, he was assasinated that very night.
This part of the story contains a link to the first two chapters of Genesis, where humans are depicted as the royal image of God, but when they exalt themselves above God, they become BEASTS.
Next, I had an intriguing dream, but what's even more peculiar about this dream is that I couldn't understand it myself until an angelic messenger explained it for me. In my dream, I saw a series of four beasts. First a lion, then a bear, then a winged leopard, and all of these symbolised arrogant kingdoms, but the biggest beast was a sort of super beast, which represented an arrogant kingdom that exalts themselves above God. This super beast had a big horn which represented a greedy and unfaithful king at the head of the beast. It is shown persecuting God's people (The Son of Man), but God, also known as The Ancient of Days, sees this and destroys the super beast, alongside this, God also exalts The Son of Man to rule over his kingdom beside him.
Then, I started wondering when all these things would actually happen, so I consulted the book of Jeremiah, and it said that the Israelites exile will last 70 years. Luckily, those 70 years are almost up, so I prayed to the Lord that he would fulfill his promise soon. Unfortunately, an angel comes and tells me that Israel's sin and rebellion has continued, so the exile will last 7 times longer than expected (490 years). I was horrified by this and had one last vision. In the vision there was a long line of lesser kings leading up to Jerusalem, and at the front of the ling was a barbaric king, known as the king of the north. This king invaded Jerusalem and put idols up around the temple. However, God saved the Israelites again by slaying the evil king and returning his kingdom back to a state of peace.
Now there is a bit of debate about who the antagonist in this story is supposed to represent. Some say the king is Antiochus, a Syrian king who destroyed Jerusalem in 160 BC, or the Roman Empire, which destroyed Jerusalem in 70 AD, or even things that are yet to happen when Jesus returns, but in a way they are all right. This is because the book of Daniel inspires any generation by showing that fighting against oppressive leaders is good and God will always deliver you.
So, to summarise, the book of Daniel is a pattern and a promise. An evil king will invade Jerusalem and then humans glorify themselves and exalt themselves above God, but when they do this, they become BEASTS. However, one day God will come and rescue his kingdom from this bad influence and restore it with the Son of Man at his side. The purpose of this story is to create hope that inspires faithfullness.
