- Katniss Everdeen has dark brown hair, grey eyes, olive skin, and braided hair. "I slept in the elaborate braided hair my mother did for that reaping and it doesn't look too bad, so I just leave it up. It doesn't matter."(32)

- Katniss Everdeen's sister Prim is chosen to become the female contestant for District 12.
- When her sister is chosen to be in the Hunger Games, she decides to take her place to save her sister from dying in the games. As they are taking away her sister, Katniss screams, "I volunteer as tribute!" to take her place. This is very important in the book because it may be a turning point in Katniss Everdeen's life. In that moment, everything she knew about her life will change.
- Katniss and Peeta, the baker's son are paired to fight together in District 12. For the cameras, Peeta and Katniss appear to be a couple, but Katniss will soon find out that their love on the cameras is true for Peeta. Later on their strong bond with each other will grow into something very important to the story.
- The Game Creators change the rules of the games and say that there can only be one survivor rather than being two. Being "in love" and not wanting to kill each other, Katniss and Peeta decide that if only one shall live, none will. They both agree to take poisonous berries and to commit suicide together. This forces the Game Creators to change back the rules and name both Peeta and Katniss winners of the Hunger Games.

- Katniss is in a situation as she goes home to two lovers. With spending so much with Peeta and him confessing his love for her, Katniss is confused on her feelings for both Peeta and Gale.
- "We could do it, you know," Gale says quietly. "What?" I ask. "Leave the district. Run off. Live in the woods. You and I, we could make it," says Gale. "I don't know how to respond. This idea is so preposterous." (23-26) Here Gale is telling Katniss that they should run away, and she doesn't want to because of her duties with her family at home.
