Storyboard Text

  • Okay sir, we will have to arrest you. You can pay a $500 fine to get out.
  • Arrest me if you want to. I'm not getting off this train cart.
  • I appeal not guilty. I want to take this case to the supreme court, your honor.
  • How do you appeal Mr. Plessy?
  • The whole case began in a train. Homer Plessy, a biracial man, entered the white train cart hoping to get arrested for breaking the law. The train had already known that Plessy was going to be there.
  • The black codes are fair and don't restrict African Americans from going on the railroad.
  • Your honor, this case was not created to promote the public good. Instead, it promotes racial prejudice.
  • Successfully, Plessy was arrested for sitting in a white train. He was released the next day with a $500 bail. However, he wanted to take the case to court.
  • Homer had hoped to take the case to court, but he wanted to take it to the supreme court. He wanted to defend his rights as a black man and show the jury that the Black codes and Jim Crow laws are unconstitutional.
  • In a 7-1 decision, the Supreme court ruled against Homer Plessy. They decided that the 14th amendments doesn't deal with social equality.
  • Segregation then became legal. Jim crow laws were created, and the nations citizens became seperate.
  • Eventually, the Plessy V. Ferguson led to the Brown vs. the board of education. People continued to fight and protest for there rights. Finally, the civil rights act of 1964 ended all the seegregation.
