This is Pip. his actual name is Philip. He lost his parents at a very young age. He had been brought up by his older sister, the wife of Joe Gargery.
An orphan, here Pip is visiting the gravestone of his parents. They died when he was too young to remember.

Suddenly, Pip is seized by a mysterious, angry stranger, dressed in rags and wearing a leg iron. He harshly confronts Pip and orders he bring him food and file to saw at his iron with. We later find out that this mysterious stranger is an escaped convict.
Pip was terrified after his encounter with the convict. Pip decided to save his own dinner incase he was not able to get into his sisters pantry in the morning. So instead of having his bread and butter he slipped it down his trouser.
In the morning, Pip crept downstairs to take some bread and butter and a meat pie form the panty. He then got a file from the forge and ran through the foggy morning to the marshes.
Pip found the convict at the right spot. He took the food and started eating it. He asked Pip if he saw anyone on the way. When Pip told him about the other convict with a bruise on his cheek he got angry and tried to break he chain with the iron file.
Pip felt guilty the next morning. he was not able to enjoy the food knowing that his sister would find out about the missing meat pie.
Pip was sure at first that police had come to arrest him. He has relived when officer explained they were on way to search marshes for the escaped man
