- Laila to the Rescue

- Mariam's Toolshed Experience
- "She [Laila] watched him shove Mariam into the toolshed. (pg 269).
- Rasheed is about to beat Mariam, also known as victimization of women, before Laila comes in and stops him. This is victimization of women because of the abuse Rasheed gives to Mariam.
- Mariam to the Rescue
- Mariam frequently gets hit in the chest by Rasheed. So when he walks in, she covers her arms over her chest to protect herself. This is Victimization of Women because she has been abused multiple times in that spot.
- Laila Sneaks out and gets Abused.
- Then the whips came down and the atennas sliced through the air, and she trudged home, bloodied, without so much glimpse of Aziza. Soon Laila took to wearing two, three sweaters beneath the burqa, for padding against the beatings. (pg 321, Hosseini)
- After being caught trying to run away, Mariam was locked into the tool shed with no food or water, almost being starved and dehydrated to death. This is victimization of Woman because Rasheed almost killed her.
- Laila's Hospital Experience
- "This hospital no longer treats women!" barked the guard (pg 285)
- After finding out about Tariq, Rasheed becomes very violent and almost kills Laila, but Mariam comes to the rescue and saves Laila by hitting Rasheed with a shovel.
- He was still on top of Laila, his eyes wide and crazy, his hands wrapped around her neck. Laila's face was turning blue now, and her eyes had rolled back. Mariam saw that she was no longer struggling. "He's going to kill her," she thought "He really means too." (pg 348, Mariam)
- When Laila tried to sneak out and see her daughter, she would often be beaten for not having a male escort. This abuse is an example of the theme Victimization of Woman.
- When Laila had gone into labor and was waiting to get treatment at the hospital, the Taliban would forbid the women to be treated at the hospital, making this victimization of woman due to the lack of rights.
