  • The Songhai Empire took place from 1464-1591, while in the 1400's the empire was under the Mali Empire's rule,
  • The Songhai Empire was located in West Africa along the Niger River.
  • The Songhai Empire was first ruled by Sunni Ali, then he was later captured by the Mali Empire as a prisoner.
  • Then in 1464 Ali escaped and took control of a city named Gao and took over, creating the empire and began to conquer trading land such as timbuktu and djenne.
  • The Songhai Empire reached its height of dominance in 1493 under Askia Muhammad, who also established the Askia Empire and Dynasty.
  • Askia Muhammad belonged to the religion of Islam and was a dedicated Muslim. As a result, the Songhai Culture adopted Islam.
  • The town chief and judges formed the five divisions of the government, each of which was presided over by a devout Muslim. Despite the fact that each is headed by a governor, the emporer is in charge.
