Ah, Gassire, Nganamba will die;but he will not leave you his sword and shield! You will carry a lute. Shield and sword shall others inherit . But your lute shall cause the loss of Wagadu!
Keikorro! When will my father, Nganamba, die and leave me his sword and shield?
Wagadu, the empire of ancient Ghana, has disappeared four times. First from vanity, second from falsehood, third from greed, and fourth from dissension. Each time she has changed her name, first to Dierra, next to Agada, then to Ganna, and finally to Silla.
Nganamaba Fasa was the last king of Dierra. He had a son named Gassire. Gassire fathered eight sons. Fasa were strong warriors who fought their enemies, the Burdama, in battle everyday. King Nganamba was very old, and Gassire longed for his fathers' death so that he could rule Wagadu.
Gassire's jealousy of his father's power enraged him so much he could no longer sleep at night. He set out to ask the oldest wise man in the city when he will be king.
Gassire sacrificed his seven sons in exchange for fame and immortality. The people were angry with Gassire for what he has done. The Fasa people began to realize that he didn't care for his sons and was choosing fame over life and because of that they no longer praised him which made him an outcast in the kingdom.
Gassire and his last son,his wives, friend and Boroma rode out into the desert. They rode for day and night and came into wilderness and in the loneliness they rested.
One night while camping, presently he slept. He heard the lute singing the Dausi. When the lute had sung the Dausi for the first time, King Ngangamba died; Gassire's rage melted; Gassire wept. When the lute had sung the Dausi for the first time, Wagadu disappeared for the first time.
