Good morning class! Today let's discuss about gametogenesis. But first, what is gametogenesis? Can you share a brief explanation about it, Olivia?
Thank you for that Olivia.
Yes. Based on books that I've read beforehand, gametogenesis is the production of sperm and egg.
In order to create a sperm, it must be haploid and in order to create a haploid gamete, a cell must go through a process called meiosis. But in humans, it occurs on the seminiferous tubules.
Spermatogenesis is the process by which male gametes or sperm are created. 200-300 are produced daily in the testes.
So basically, gametogenesis has two types which are spermatogenesis and oogenesis. But let's talk about spermatogenesis first.
Spermatogonia enters the process of meiosis and become primary spermatocyte. When cells double in number after first meiotic division, it is called the secondary spermatocyte.
But before we move on, did you copy everything that was projected on the board?
Germ cells. These are the cells that'll become gametes. There are germ cells that are found in the testes which is spermatogonium.
Okay, let's proceed to the sperm cell's precursors.
Yes miss!
Yes miss!
After the meiotic division is ended? What will happen next?
Correct, but don't get too excited! Since the secondary spermatocyte is continuously migrating, it will form four haploid spermatids. When spermatids are in a correct number of chromosomes, a fully functional sperm is made afterwards.
Will it become a sperm?
Oh, I see!
In addition, they have a single flagellum. A sperm cell uses this to lash back and forth in order to propel the sperm forward.
That's right! The sperm has nucleus because it contains the haploid genome. It also has an acrosome cap which penetrates the layers of the ovum so that the sperm can get inside.
I guess everyone of you knows what the sperm looks like right?
Yes! It is like a tadpole, I guess?
That's all for today class! Let's tackle oogenesis next meeting. I have an appointment to attend this morning. See you all tomorrow!
Thank you miss! Good bye!
Thanks for today miss! I learned a lot today.
