Shaw and Lee's article begins by defining reproductive rights as way as the way different groups view them (331). Continuing from that, the piece specifies into the idea of conception. This includes not only access to tools like abortion, but also female sterilization which is a good tool for those never planning to conceive (333). As the piece specifies more towards abortion, it ties in insights of why a woman may believe an abortion is the smartest option for them. This can include personal reasons, financial reasons, information about the baby's health, and alike (334-349). Beliefs centering around abortion tend to influence levels of support given to those who may be getting one.

Shaw and Lee's article made me think about access to abortion in our current society, as well as people close to me who have needed one for various reasons. While I've never been in that situation, there are so many aspects that can lead a woman to that decision. I believe women should have access if that is what they believe they need to do.

Riley spent a night out celebrating her 21st birthday with some friends. As the night wrapped up, her and her boyfriend headed home, and the night led to them having unprotected sex.
Slide: 5
Two weeks later, Riley missed her period, which was very unusual for her. She took a pregnancy test, since she knew something wasn't normal. The test came back positive.
I can't be pregnant! I'm not ready to have a baby!

Weeks later, Riley went to the doctors to check up on the pregnancy.
How's my baby?
This is very hard news, but your baby has a prenatal condition. This pregnancy puts your life at extreme risk, and if the baby is born he's likely to pass in his first few months...

Riley's boyfriend was the first person she talked to. Her parent's were always supportive, but she didn't know how anyone was going to react. Her boyfriend would be there for her though.
I need to have an abortion. I'm in danger and I don't want our baby to suffer!
I understand and will support you through every piece of this.

Next she had to tell her parents. While they were supportive of her, she had no idea what they would say.
We're proud of you for considering the baby's needs. If you need any help accessing care we can help you.
This is really hard to tell you guys, but I'm terminating my pregnancy. I hope you understand that I want kids, but this baby has a condition. It is likely he wont survive, and carrying out the pregnancy puts my life at risk.
Slide: 9
Next, she had to tell her grandma and grandpa, who she knew wouldn't support this decision.
I have to terminate my pregnancy. (gives the same reasoning again)
You cant do this. You took sex-ed right? You knew not to have sex before marriage. You have to be responsible for the decisions you made now. We believe "abortion is murder" (Shaw 343).

While Riley partially expected the response, she had wished her grandparents would understand where she was coming from. Despite what they say, she thinks this is necessary, but support would help her get through it a lot better.
It doesn't matter what anyone else says! This is your decision and I will be there with you throughout it all.
I just wish they were in my position. Then they would understand!! "Thousands of lives have been saved by access to abortions" (Shaw 341), and I likely wont survive this without one!
Slide: 11
When the day came, Riley was anxious but knew the right decision for her. She was grateful both that she had access to the care she needed, and that she had people supporting her even when it may not have been the decision they loved.
Riley, we're ready...
