This chapter is narrated by the protagonist Grant. In this novel by Ernest J. Gaines the main character reluctantly must teach a dying black man, who has been sentenced to death, how to be a man. Grant is not only unsure of his task but himself. Throughout the novel Grant seems to learn more than his student.
