- Foreshadowing: To predict what will happen next based on hints or clues in a text.
- Characteristics
- Increase suspense, hint to something that will happen in the future, specific details are given to the reader, it seems like conflict is mounting, or a change in mood or tone occurs in the chapter.

- Throughout the story, the reader learns that Lennie likes to touch soft things. He has been repeatedly warned about petting his puppy too hard. Therefore, the reader foreshadows the puppy's death.
