- The Ordinary World
- The hero is at home in their ordinary world. In Ithaca King Odysseus’ home with his wife Penelope and newborn son Telemachus
- Something happens that causes them to go on an adventure. Odysseus is setting out for a battle at Troy
- The Call to Aventure
- The hero is hesitant at first to go on a journey. He does not want to leave his family and sail to Troy; he knows it will be a long trip and he’s fatherly instincts do not want to leave his son.
- Refusal
- Mentor Helper
- However a helper arrives that will guide the hero through his journey. Odysseus is added by Athena who takes pity on him.
- After the war the gods became angry with the Greeks for their prideful ways; a great storm emerges and throws them off course. There is no way to avoid it, and they are cast into a new world.
- Crossing the Threshold
- Test/Allies/Enemies
- On his way Odysseus is thwarted with many tests as he tries to travel back to Ithaca: Polyphemus, Circones, Lotus eaters, Lastrygonians, Sirens, Scylla & Charybdis, and Cattle of the Sun God.
