  • Welcome to SKYCITY Hamilton.
  • Hi Tim, Security informed me that you slipped over and hurt your arm? Do you need to go to the Doctor? Make sure you inform the Doctor that we can offer alternative duties.
  • Yes Jane, it's very painful. I'm going to the Doctor.
  • City Medical Centre
  • Tim: The Doctor told me I have a sprained wrist. I'm restricted from doing any work with my injured hand. He said I can do alternative duties. I have a medical certificate. Jane: Ok Tim, that's great. I can provide alterative duties. So you have all your ACC paperwork? Tim: I have my paperwork but what do I need to do?
  • Tim doesn't understand how the claims process works. So Tim and Jane go to see Human Resources. We do not have a Claims Advisor on site.
  • Human Resources
  • What is ACC? ACC is a scheme to help people with injuries to recover and obtain medical treatment. SKYCITY is in the ACC Partnership Programme. We have a Claims Advisor based in Auckland who works with local HR to manage work claims. The Claims Advisor works with ACC, you and local HR to help you recover while at work regardless of where your injury occurred. ACC audits us each year to ensure we have a good Health and Safety and Injury Management process that keeps you safe and assists you in your recovery from injury. WellNZ is the company that helps SKYCITY with claims administration.
  • So far Tim has done well! He reported his injury to security and his supervisor. He talked to his Doctor about restricted duties. He has come to work and provided his medical documentation. He won't be able to work in the kitchen but Jane has agreed that Tim can work in the office.
  • Jane: How are the restricted duties Tim? Tim: It's ok Jane, my hand still hurts but the Doctor says it's healing. What would happen if I couldn't work, how would I get paid? Have they made a decision on my claim? Jane: Let's ask Human Resources to explain.

  • As an accredited employer SKYCITY must investigate all work injury claims. We have 21 days from receipt of a simple claim to make a decision and 2 months for a more complex claim. We can extend that time frame if we need more time to investigate. ACC define the difference between a simple and complex claim. If we accept your claim we will send you an acceptance letter outlining your ACC entitlements. If the claim is declined we will contact you to discuss before sending a letter of decline. If you aren't happy with the decision you can ask for a review, but speak with me first. If an agreement can't be reached then you can make a review application within 3 months of the decision. An independent agency will hold a review hearing.
  • To make sure you are paid correctly keep your certificate current and with consecutive dates. Back dated certificates won't be accepted. If on restricted duties you will have to complete a weekly rehabilitation timesheet and ensure this is forwarded to HR by 2pm each Monday to avoid payment delays.
  • If accepted your ACC wage entitlement is then calculated. You need to have an ACC certificate to cover the period of time you require restricted duties/hours or are fully unfit. If fully unfit ACC wage entitlements are 80% of your average earnings prior to the injury. If working on restricted duties you will receive up to 100%.
  • Jane called and told me Tim is not coping with his duties. I told her this is ok. Jane changed his duties and he is now doing something more suitable. If Tim continues to have problems, we can arrange for an Occupational Therapist to assist with his recovery at work. I told Jane we should have a Case Meeting.
  • What is a Case Meeting? If you are on restricted duties or off work for more than seven days we need to meet for a case conference meeting. At this meeting we discuss your recovery and put things in place to meet your work, medical and social needs. A rehabilitation plan is agreed and signed by all parties involved. You are always entitled to a support person of your choosing at case meetings. You can ask for a break in the meeting to talk to that support person, if you wish, prior to resuming the meeting. Your manager also attends the meetings to assist with managing your safe return to work. It is a requirement to attend case meetings unless reasonable circumstances prevent you from doing so.
  • Why recovery at work Amy? ( If you require a case meeting you will meet with the Claims Advisor via teleconference, who is located on the Auckland site. Local HR and/or your manager will attend with you.
  • Claims Advisor's Office
  • You are encouraged to return to work as soon as able to allow you to recover while still working. Restricted or alternate duties will be found, either in your work area or in another department temporarily, to enable you to work safely while you get better. Being at work benefits both you and SKYCITY. It helps you to remain engaged with your co workers and customers. You continue to earn your usual level of pay and you mobilise safely to allow your injury to heal better.
  • SKYCITY will assist you to stay at work by, for example, arranging work hours around medical appointment times or assisting with temporary injury related transport needs. Talk to your manager, local HR or Claims Advisor to get assistance with your recovery at work and to assist you to keep within the work restrictions on your medical certificate.
