Moses Austin was a banker and business owner who wanted to start a U.S. colony in Spanish Texas. Spanish officials granted Austin a huge piece of land in 1821. Moses then died that same year and his son Stephen took over what his father started. Stephen Austin arrived in Texas after Mexico declared it's independence from Spain and took control of Texas. Mexican officials still let Austin start his own colony but under certain conditions. Austin must only select moral and hardworking settlers and have to promise to become Mexican citizens and join the Catholic Church. Austin agreed to Mexico's terms. In 1827 he attractedd 297 families-soon known as the "Old Three Hundred"- to Texas.
The Alamo
Austin's colony was a success and started a rush of settlers to Texas. By 1830, about 25,000 Americans lived in Texas, compared to the 4,000 Tejanos. Tension began to arise. Americans had severely complaints. they were used to governing themselves and resented taking orders from Mexican officials. They also didn't like how all official documents had to be in Spanish and slaveholders were upset when Mexico outlawed slavery in 1829. The Tejanos had their own complaints, they were unhappy with how many Americans settlers came to Texas. The new immigrants showed little respect for Mexican culture and had no intention of being citizens. Mexico responded by closing Texas to further U.S immigrants.
Texas Wins Its Indpendence
If you want to be free then get your troops out of Texas!
Okay fine !
As president i declare that Texas a state!
Americans in Texas didn't like these actions so they had two groups one led by Willian Travis and another by Stephen Austin. Austin asked Mexico to reopen Texas and to make it a separate Mexican state so that Texans can run the state. In 1833, Austin traveled to Mexico and presented Texans' demands to the new head of the Mexican government, General Antonio López de Santa Anna. the general was power-hungry so he said: "If I were God, I would wish to be more." Santa Anna arrested and jailed Austin. When Austin was released in 1835, Texans rosed to revolt. Santa Anna marched north with 6,000 troops.
To Annex Texas or Not?
James K. Polk is the new President of the United States
In late February of 1836, a large part of Santa Anna's army reached San Antonio, Texas. About 180 Texan volunteers, including eight Tejanos, defended the town. The Texans had taken over an old mission known as the Alamo. Davy Crockett was among them and William Travis was sharing his command with him was James Bowie, a well-known Texas "freedom fighter". The Alamo's defenders watched as General Santa Anna raised a black flag the meant "expect no mercy." The general demanded that they surrender. Slowly, Santa Anna's troop began to surround the Alamo and the Texans were outnumbered, but only one man fled. For 12 days the Mexicans pounded the Alamo, until March 6 when Santa Anna ordered his troops to storm the fort. After 90 minutes the battle was over.
Kaboom
Sam Houston, the commander of the Texas revolutionary army, understood Texans' rage. But Santa Anna pushed on and Houstons hope was to retreat eastward. Houston hoped by luring Santa Anna deeper into Texas it would be more difficult to supply his army. Although Houston's plan was unpopular it worked. In April, Santa Anna caught up with Houston near the San Jacinto River. The general and his troop stayed up all night thinking the Texans would attack at dawn. When no attack came, the Mexicans relaxed, and Santa Anna took a nap. Houston's troops then staged a surprise attack. Yelling, "Remember the Alamo!" the Texans Overran the Mexican camp. promoting Santa Anna to flee. He was captured the next day and in exchange for his freedom, he ordered his troops out of Texas. Texas won their independence but Mexico didn't fully accept the loss.
And let us be independent!!
Now independent, the Republic of Texas earned the nickname the Lone Star Republic because of the single star on its flag. But most Texans were Americans who wanted Texas to become part of the United States. Texas remained independent for ten years, during that time people in the United States were divided over whether to annex Texas. Southerners wanted another slave state, but he northerners wanted to keep slavery out of Texas. In 1844 the presidential campaign was influenced by the question if whether to expand U.S territory. James K. Polk was elected and Congress voted to and Texas. In 1845, Texas became the 28th state.
