- Act One: Scene One The play opens outside the castle. Bernardo and Marcellus, Two soldiers,have witnessed the ghost of Old Hamlet. Horatio is invited to investigate the ghost sighting. The ghost disappears and reappears, but is quiet.
- Act One:Scene Two Horatio tells Hamlet that he had seen his dead father the night before.Hamlet decided to go on watch with Horatio and Marcellus that night in hopes of seeing the ghost himself.
- Act One: Scene Three Laertes Advises Ophelia about her relationship with Hamlet. He tells Ophelia to forget about her relationship with Hamlet and to guard her chastity. Ophelia agrees, with Laertes and attends his lessons.
- Act One: Scene Four At night watch, Hamlet, Horatio and Marcellus await the reappearance of the ghost. The ghost reappears.The ghost signals Hamlet to follow him. Horatio and Marcellus try to keep Hamlet from following him, but Hamlet doesn't listen.
- Act One: Scene Five Alone with Hamlet, the ghost speaks.The ghost reveals that he was murdered by his own brother.Claudius,the current King of Denmark.The ghost demands vengeance upon Claudius. Hamlet decides to act mad in order to gain revenge upon his fathers murderer.
