- Lizabeth, Joey, Ms. Lottie are the main characters of the story. The story takes place in the 20th century and in a region where racial discrimination is prevalent. The story opens with older Lizabeth reminiscing her childhood and the mistake she made back then.
- Exposition
- Lizabeth, along with some other kids dislike the fact that something as beautiful as those flowers do not match the place and throw rocks and knock them down.

- Falling Action
- Rising Action Part 1
- Lizabeth overhears her parents talking where she sees her father cry for the first time. The family's difficulties and emotions at that present time are revealed and witnessing this sad event sends Lizabeth into a state of rage.
- Rising Action Part 2
- It's going to be alright,don't worry.
- In her rage and frustration, she took path of destruction and unfortunately, it was the beautiful marigolds of Ms. Lottie that suffered her wrath.
- Lizabeth, stop!
- Climax
- Ms. Lottie sees her and Lizabeth cannot stop her tears. There was no anger in Ms. Lottie's eyes, just sadness since the one thing beautiful in her life was no more. This would be Lizabeth's last crazy act of childhood.
- Lizabeth still regrets her actions even after so many years and has planted her own marigolds. Every time she recalls those beautiful golden flowers, there is still some pain felt and she has tried to redeem herself years after Ms. Lottie's death.
