- Hi. My name is Brenda Milner. I conducted this study on a participant named HM. My goal for this study was to better understand the effects of an experimental brain surgery performed on him.
- You see, when HM was 7 years old, he fell off his bike and cracked his skull. For 17 years after that, he experience horrible seizures that got in the way of his life. At 27, he underwent an intense experimental surgery on his brain.
- I tested many strategies on HM, some being:- pyschometric testingdirect observation of behaviour-interview with him and his family- cognitive testing-MRI scans
- I found that HM could not acquire new episodic knowledge or semantic knowledge. His motor skills and working memory were well maintained.
- This is Dr. Corkin, She is the one that performed the surgery on HM.
- I decided to bring HM in for multiple MRI's over a few years to assess the damage to his brain. I found that there was extensive damage to his temporal lobe which explains why he had trouble transferring short term memory into long term memory.
- This study was a very important study in relation to the cognitive approach. It was also different from many other studies as it was a longitudinal study, lasting over 50 years. This study helped us gain a better understanding as to the brain and how it impacts our day to day lives.
