  • We haave elected Elizabeth Zinser as the new President of Gallaudet University!
  • THIS IS NOT WHAT WE WANTED!

  • We must respect the Board's decision and I am in full support of Elizabeth Zinser.
  • The Board director Spilam made the announcement that candidate Elizabeth Zinser was chosen as the the Gallaudet University President. This greatly upset the students, because they felt that they weren't being properly represented. In all the years Gallaudet had been open they had never had a deaf or hard of hearing President.
  • March 10, 1988
  • DEAF PRESIDENT NOW! WE NEED TO BE REPRESENTED!
  • Students began protesting the decision from the board. They didn't go to their classes, parked buses around the school with popped tires so no one could get in. They wanted to make the point that they didn't believe Zinser was a good choice, and wanted to get the Board of Education attention.
  • March 11-12, 1988
  • After meeting with four student leaders, and the Board, Dr. I King Jordan gave his support to Zinser. At the meeting the students tried to convince Zinser to step down but she refused.
  • March 13, 1988
  • THANK YOU TO EVERYONE FOR THEIR SUPPORT AND EFFORT TO IMPROVED OUR COMMUNITY!
  • Protests continued around the capital and school. Board member Spilman and Zinser attemped to enter but were blocked byt the growing group of protesters.
  • Elizabeth Zinser finally resigned from her position as President, and Spilman stepped down as the Dircetor of the Board. The students took the 11th to rest and celebrate the win for the whole communtiy of Deaf and those hard of hearing.
  • Dr. I King Joran was chosen as the 8th President of Gallaudet University, and was the first deaf President the school had ever had.
