  • The story begins when a man named Benjamin Mee and his wife, kids and mother arrive at a house belonging to Benjamin's brother, Duncan, that is attached to a zoo that they have bought. Benjamin's brother, Duncan, welcomes them into his home, as they hear wolves howling in the distance.

  • Dad, look!
  • Benjamin explains about the beginning, when his life was normal, before they bought the zoo. When he found out about the zoo for sale, he was determined to buy it. His kids, Milo and Ella, were immediately entranced by the idea. His wife, Katherine, isn't so sure. He disagrees with other people, finally overruling them, refusing to let go of his dream.
  • FALLING ACTION
  • APPROVED
  • About a year before Benjamin and his family leave their home in France to move to the zoo, Katherine is diagnosed with a brain tumour. She is expected to live for less than a year, but pulls through after having chemotherapy. After the tumour is gone, they leave, with the warning that Katherine's brain tumour is likely to return ringing in their ears.
  • RESOLUTION
  • ZOO
  • Animals escape from enclosures, having a deadly reign of the zoo before being caught, and smuggled back into their cages. Meanwhile, Katherine's brain tumour has returned, worse than ever. Benjamin desperately urges the doctors to try any treatment they could think of, but nothing can save her.
  • Her cancer came back, honey. I miss her too.
  • Daddy, I miss Mummy. Why did she have to die?
  • Slowly, the zoo begins to flourish. Despite his wife having passed away, Benjamin does not lose heart and continues on with his refurbishing of the zoo. He makes many valuable changes as he employs new staff and the progress becomes much more evident than before to everyone. Inspectors come and look over the zoo and finally give it their approval.
  • Opening day comes at last. The zoo is an immediate success. The animals are very entertaining, the gift shop is stuffed with goodies, and the staff are kind and ready to help out. Benjamin receives lots praise, and though there is some criticism, he and his workers know that they have succeeded in their goal, even though no one ever thought they could.
