Storyboard Text

  • Hi, my name is Francis, and I am a mathematician. The government hasasked me to remeasure the heights of two famous monuments in France: the Eiffel Tower and the Louvrepyramid.
  • First up: The Eiffel Tower. When I look up at a 63.5 degree angle of elevation, I can see the top, and I am 149.25 meters from the center of the base of the tower. Also, from the ground to my eyes is 1.5 meters. That way, tan63.5 = x/149.25, and therefore x = 298.5. However, this distance is only from my eye-level up, so we need to add the 1.5 meters in my height. Therefore, the height of the Eiffel Tower is 300 meters.
  • Second, the Louvre. When I look up at a45 degree angle of elevation, I can see the top, and I am 19 meters from the center of the base of the tower. Also, from the ground to my eyes is 1.5 meters. That way, because this is a 45-45-90 triangle, the height is the distance I am from the base and therefore it is just 19 meters. However, this distance is only from my eye-level up, so we need to add the 1.5 meters in my height. Therefore, the height of the Louvre pyramid is 20.5 meters
  • The government also wanted me to check the angle of the Leaning Tower of Pisa in Italy, as it would be dangerous once it tilts too much.
  • I kept walking towards the base of the tower until I had to look up at a 90 degree angle of elevation, and found that I was 4 meters from the base, and I also know that the height of the tower is 56.75 meters tall. That way the angle is tan-1(4/56.75), or 4 degrees. It is still safe for tourists!
  • Well, looks like everything is the same as before, so that was a little useless. Oh well, lets just take that as another opportunity to practice my trigonometry skills!
