- Scenario Two
- Tommy, why are you not working with your group?
- This assignment is stupid. I’m not going to participate in a debate like this in real life, so why are you making me do it now? I’m not wasting my time with this.
- Then you can take a zero on this project and spend the rest of your class period out in the hall. How does that sound??
- Sounds a lot better than being in here with you.
- Looks like yet another class I don't care about and will just fail.
- Scenario Three
- Tommy, why are you not working with your group?
- Well, Tommy, I'd like to discuss this with you some more. Why don't you step out and wait for me, please.
- Okay, Tommy, I understand you're upset and don't want to do the project. Can you please tell me why?
- I just feel like I don't have as much to contribute and I'll be seen as the one pulling my debate group down.
- I can sympathize with why you feel that way. I promise you I took extra time and thought in preparing these groups and I believe that you have a lot to offer this group in particular. You're so quick with facts and easy going, I'd like to see you try. What if we thought of a new topic your group can do?
- Really? I guess I could try then.
- That's a great idea, Tommy! I'm glad you're in our group
