- It was just Te Kore (darkness), until Ranginui (the sky) and Papatūānuku (the earth), two gods that been created.
- Papatūānuku then had six male children. They were named Tāne-mahuta, Tāwhirimātea, Haumia-tiketike, Rongomātane, Tangaroa, and Tūmatauenga. After living in the darkness for years, the six brothers had a debate for what they could do to see what was beyond Ranginui and Papatūānuku. Tūmatauenga said that they could kill their parents, while Tāwhirimātea said to leave them. After some time, another brother said ‘why don’t we separate our parents’, the others stop debating, and they all agreed to separate their parents.
