"Kill the beast! Cut his throat! Spill his blood! Do him in!"
"AHHHHHH!"
Roger leaves the middle and becomes a hunter, leaving the center of the circle empty. Lightning strikes, creating a large, booming noise, and the chant rises in tone. Simon emerges out of the forest, and thinking he is the beast, the boys' circle turns into a horseshoe.
Simon is put in the middle of the circle, and the boys continue their chant. Simon struggles to speak about the dead man he found while the thunder continues to roar.
Simon manages to break free from the circle and falls of the platform onto the sandy part of the beach. The rest of the boys jump after him and start biting, scratching, and tearing at him, ultimately killing him.
The clouds finally opened up, and it was now clear to see what the beast really was. The heavy wind pushed the dead parachuter off the mountaintop onto the beach, and then into the sea. All the boys ran, except Simon, who was dead.
The rain stopped around midnight, and the stars could now be seen. Lines of glowing phosphorescence were in the sand, accompanied with pebbles. Gleaming creatures gathered around Simon's head. His head slightly lifted and then turned towards the water.
Simon's dead body peacefully drifted out to sea, surrounded by the shining creatures.
