  • Mr. Antolini's Apartment
  • The record store on Broadway is important in terms of mood. This element is important to this setting because this scene changes the mood of Holden. Holden really wants to buy a present for his younger sister, Phoebe who always remind him of his sweet childhood. As a reader we also get the same feeling as Holden does.
  • The Central Park Carousel
  • American Museum of Natural History is important in terms of symbolism. This element is important to this setting because this place stands for Holden's thoughts that he just wants to stay the same as the objects in the glass. He doesn't want to change nor does he wants to grow up.
  • The Wicker Bar
  • Phoebe's school is important in terms of internal conflict. This element is important to this setting because the curse words he sees on the school staircase make him feel angry. He tries to wipe them off but he can't. He tries to protect children's innocence but he fails. He is very frustrated with his inability to save children from the corrupt world.
  • The Diner on the East Side
  • Mr. Antolini's apartment is important in terms of external conflict. This element is important to this setting because Holden considers Mr. Antolini as the only true friend he has and can talk to. But when Holden is sleeping, all of the sudden he feels Mr. Antolini petting his head. Holden jumps up immediately because he thinks he is abused and frightened. He loses his hope of trusting adults completely. He feels he has fallen into a deep pit without any hope.
  • The Central Park Carousel is important in terms of external conflict. This element is important to this setting because this is the place where Holden's plan to go out West was setback by Phoebe's intention to run away with him. He realize that he will ruin his sister's whole life. So he had to change his mind to go home with her.
  • The Wicker Bar is important in terms of irony. This element is important to this setting because the irony is that despite his love of "childhood innocence". Holden is and acts far from innocent himself. An example of this is when he meets with Luce at the bar, he is so curious about Luce's sex life hoping Luce will give him some advice. In fact, he strives so hard to fit in the corrupt adult world he shares his contempt for.
  • The Diner on the East Side is important in terms of mood. This element is important to this setting because this scene depicts Holden's mood of not wanting to waste Phoebe's Christmas money the 2nd time around because he is practically broke after the 1st time, so he goes into a cheap restaurant. As a reader we feel sympathy for him because we know how pitiful he is.
