It all started in first grade, before I had any idea that I had dyslexia. I thought everyone struggled in the same ways I did but this is how everyone else saw the board on the first day....
Sammie, will you come with me please?
Why?
and this is how I saw the board.
It seems you are really struggling in spelling and reading so we are going to take a test to see why that is. Okay?
Ummm, okay?
As the school year started to get into full swing, we began to take spelling tests once a week. I failed almost every single spelling and vocabulary test we took. I was excelling in all other areas besides this so my teacher decided to call in some help.
Right before Thanksgiving break I was pulled out of class by a lady I had never seen before, but little did I know how important she would become. Her name was Mrs. Christensen.
The first day I met Mrs. Christensen she sat me down in a small room and explained that we were going to take a short test together. I remember being very confused as to why none of my other classmates had to take this test, but I didn't ask any questions and took the test anyway.
The next day at recess I was called into the principal's office where I was shocked to see my mom, my teacher and Mrs Christensen waiting for me. They explained why I had to take the test the day before and what my results meant. They explained to me and my mother that I had a learning disability called dyslexia and that is why I was falling so far behind in spelling and reading.
