  • Miss Penny, Class 5STodays Lesson - ALGEBRA
  • Good Morning kids! Today we are going to start learning about algebra! It's a little bit difficult to understand at the beginning, but with time I'm sure you'll grasp the concepts with no trouble! So let's jump straight in!
  • Why is everyone else understanding algebra so quickly? I don't get it!
  • Oh I get it!!!
  • Excuse me Miss Penny. Why is everyone else understanding this and I'm not?
  • That's a great question Tom! I want everyones attention to the front please.
  • Now that I've got everyone attention. Tom just asked me why isn't he understanding the information as quickly as Stacy, or Evie? Im sure you've all felt the same way before! So, I want to show you all something.
  • You all have these awesome things in your brains called schemas. You have lots and lots, because you are all so very smart!
  • Schemas
  • Now, a schema describes how knowledge is structured in our brain and it helps to organises all the information we know!
  • To answer your question Tom, your schemas don't hold the same knowledge as everyone else yet, and that's ok. Stacy told me she went home yesterday and did some maths work, so her schemas already know a bit about algebra. Meanwhile you were busy doing your English homework.
  • But that's fixable Tom! Our brains are always ready and excited to add more knowledge to the information we already know, or better the information we already know!
  • Accommodation
  • These two processes are called Accommodation and Assimilation. They both impact how our schemas hold information!
  • Schemas
  • Assimilation
  • Let's begin by talking about Assimilation. Stacy can you please come out the front?
  • Assimilation
  • Now, because Stacy did her maths homework last night, she built on her prior knowledge of maths, and added the concepts of algebra to her schemas. This is called assimilation, when someone encounters a new idea, and needs to find a way to fit it in with the knowledge already in their brain.
  • That's true Miss Penny! Now that I finally understand what algebra is, I feel like I know so much more about maths!
  • Thanks Stacy! Finally, accommodation has a different impact on our schema's! Tom can I please have you out the front for this demonstration?
  • Accommodation
  • The notion of accommodation requires a learner, like yourself to reshape the information you already know. For example, at this point, you think maths only requires the understanding of how our number system works. Although, it's so much more than that, as you've seen today.
  • Today I have been reshaping that prior knowledge. Now you know we can use symbols like X Y and Z to represent a number. Your schemas are questioning what you knew in the past, and is using the new information available to them to have a better understanding of a topic.
  • OHHH!! That makes sense Miss Penny. So it's ok I don't understand it at the moment? My schemas are just working hard right now to interpret the information, and than one day I will know how to do algebra!
  • That's exactly right Tom! We all learn at different rates, and its ok if we don't understand things straight away! Does everyone understand?
  • YESSSS!!!!!
