  • Mae Jemison was born on October 17, 1956 in Decatur, AL.
  • Mae was the youngest of three. Parents: Charlie Jemison (Carpenter), Dorothy (Green) Jemison (Teacher), Sister: Ada Jemison Bullock (Child Psychiatrist), Brother: Charles Jemison (Real estate broker).
  • When people asked Mae what she wanted to be when she grew up she said a scientist. At that time little African-American girls usually didn't get to grow up to be scientists.
  • Mae graduated at Stanford University with a bachelor of science and chemical engineering in 1973.
  • Mae entered Cornell, during her years there she studied in Cuba and Kenya and worked at a Cambodian refugee camp in Thailand.
  • Mae became the first African American woman to be admitted into NASA's astronaut training program on June 4, 1987.
  • the first time Mae went into space was with six other people aboard the Endeavour, on September 12, 1992.
  • Mae has won eight awards, including one thing name after her.

  • When Mae left astronaut corps in March 1993 Mae accepted a teaching fellowship at Dartmouth.
