  • Representatives from the Soviet Union such as; Ukraine, Georgia, Belarus, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Moldova, etc. began to part from the Soviet Union and didn't want anything to do with it. Instead, they announced they would form a commonwealth of independent states.
  • Suez Crisis

  • NATO (National Atlantic Treaty Organization). This organization was used in the cold war to support and strengthen the Western Allies military against an invasion from the Soviet Union. Nato relied a lot on Americas nuclear weapons as a threat, so they decided to have a "flexible response" so that in war things can be solved more peacefully than dropping nuclear weapons.
  • Berlin Wall
  • The Cuban Missile Crisis was between the United States and the Soviet Union during the Cold war. The soviet made a secret agreement and placed missiles in Cuba to prevent invasion. The U.S told the Soviets to dismantle their missiles and were in defcon 2 at the time. The Soviets said they would only if the US dismantled their missiles in Turkey. In the end they both ended up dismantling their weapons, and if they didn't the two superpowers would start a nuclear conflict.

  • The Suez Crisis was and attempt by Israel, the United Kingdom, and France to invade Egypt and take over Western control of the Suez Canal and get rid of Gamal Abdel Nasser (Egypt President). As they attempted to invade Egypt they miserably failed as the united states and USSR forced them to withdraw.
  • During the Cold War, the German Democratic Republic constructed the Berlin Wall to prevent its population from fleeing to West Berlin from East Berlin under Soviet control. This divided the two sides and was guarded to insure nobody could go to the other side.
  • Castro became allies with the Soviet Union in response to the threats, and allowed the Soviets to place nuclear weapons in Cuba, resulting in the Cuban Missile Crisis in 1962. Castro encouraged the Soviet leader to have no mercy and use their missiles if necessary.
