  • Slide: 1
  • We can’t collect taxes?!
  • So how are we supposed to get money?
  • The Articles of Confederation won’t let us tax the people.
  • The Articles of Confederation created a weak national government. One of the biggest problem was that it could not collect taxes the government had no money, which meant it couldn’t pay for important things like the army , roads, bridges, or public projects.
  • Slide: 2
  • Look at this! The roads are full of holes. Who is going to pay to fix this?!
  • We don’t have the money….
  • BROKEN ROADS NO REPAIRS
  • Because the government couldn’t collect taxes, it didn’t have enough money to pay for the needs of the country. This meant roads, bridges, and other public projects fell apart. It also hurt everyday people, like farmers and merchants, because trade and travel became more difficult and more expensive
  • Slide: 3
  • I know, but the government doesn’t have any money. We can’t collect taxes, so we can’t pay you…
  • We haven’t been paid in months!
  • How are we supposed to keep fighting without getting any money?!
  • The lack of money also hurt the army. Soldiers were not paid, and there was no money to buy supplies like food, clothing or weapons. This made the country weak and left it unprepared for danger. Other countries, like Britain, looked at the United States and saw it as not strong or United.
