- Put it away
- There's nothing 
- No wonder she was worried 
- Mattie is reading the letters but she is trying to put them away but she can't she keeps reading the letters and it won't stop. She tells herself she is better than her aunt and she better put them away but wants to find out more about why they came to the Glenmore and why Chester wrote Carl. 
- PA told me to always be careful 
- She decides to open another letter and as she reads she finds out that Grace Brown was so sad without Chester. She wanted him to come to visit her so they could leave but he hadn't responded. Grace also apologized for the mean letter she wrote earlier but Mattie didn't find out anything to help her solve the questions she had. 
- I am so confused 
- She decided to read the letters that Chester Gillette had written to Grace and it said that he felt bad for not writing to Grace. He told her about his week when he worked and a friend came over to his home. They then went to the lake but he invited two other girls, so that's why Grace was sad and worried because of the other girls. 
- I could vomit 
- Mattie then realizes why she was worried because Chester got her pregnant so she had to marry him but he was with other girls. He didn't want to be married he still wanted to have fun. Mattie remembers all of her Pa's warnings about men and how they always want one thing. She also remembers when they were fighting at dinner about the chapel. 
- Mattie believed that he did the right thing to take her to the Glenmore Hotel to elope but then she thought if he really did bring her for that. Mattie was so confused about Grace and Chester's story she felt like the feather thing that was thrown in badminton. She decided to read a letter she found by Chester. 
- When Mattie started reading Chester's letter it said, that the three of them went to the lake and stayed at a camp that one of them owned. They had a great time even with no girls and he was swimming and was in a canoe. Mattie soon realized that Chester knew how to swim and handle a boat and Grace can't swim. She felt sick and finally realized why Chester brought Grace to the Glenmore.
