Society in Haiti consisted of four classes. The " Grand Blancs", "Petit Blancs", the "Geune De Colour" and the "Neg Bossal" and " Neg Creole".
"Geune De Colour"
The "Grand Blancs" meaning "Big Whites" were at the top of the social pyramid in St Domingue. They were the richest of the population. They were the ones who owned plantations. They often didn't even live on the island but had someone overseer for them while they built estates in France
"Neg Bossal" and "Neg Creole"
The "Petit Blancs" meaning "Little Whites" were also at the top of the social pyramid but they often took the jobs of overseers or bookkeepers or any job that does not include physical work.
Society
"Geune De Colour" are the freepersons of colour. These persons were often richer and better educated than the "Petit Blancs" these persons sometimes even had their own plantations and even slaves yet they did not have the same rights as them. They were not allowed to vote and after some time laws were put in place so they could not inherit estates.
The "Neg Bossal" and "Neg Creole" are the slaves. They are at the bottom of the social pyramid. They were treated terribly despite being the reason why mostly everyone else prospers. They were treated so badly that the overseers and plantation owners didn't bother to provide food or clothing because they could purchase more slaves when the current ones die out.
This society was filled with unfair treatment and persons who are trying to climb up the social ladder. This was one of the reasons the Haitian Revolution was so successful.
