- Halku was a tenant farmer who was as rich as any other farmer. He was drowning in all the debts he owed. He lived with his wife, Munni.
- January Night (Picture Story)
- I suggest that we pay after the harvest is sold, so that we will at least have some money.
- They only had three rupees, and had to decide whether to give it away to the landlord, paying off the debt or to save the rupees to buy a blanket, helping Halku survive the cold, January nights.
- Then, I'll just have to put up with his abuse.
- Eventually, they gave it to the landlord, paying off their rent.This also meant that they could no longer afford a blanket, and Halku would have to endure the harsh weather without cover.
- *sigh*
- Later, night had set and now Halku had to sleep out in the fields, without a blanket. His dog, Jabra followed behind him. His limbs were growing numb so, he decided to collect leaves from the neighbour's fields, to light up a fire.
- After having managed to collect enough leaves, Halku ignited a fire and felt warmed from the heat, eventually falling asleep beside it.
- The fire only lasted a few hours before extinguishing, leaving behind its ashes and embers. Halku drew closer towards its remains. Just then, Jabra heard some noise coming from the fields, which sounded like wild animals trampling and chewing the crops.
