Nitrogen comes from the atmosphere and takes up 78% of Earth's atmosphere, however,we cant breath it because it toxic to our lungs, they were only made to take in oxygen, therefore the nitrogen needs to go into multiple stages first.First of all, nitrogen comes down as precipitation, then enters the soil
The nitrogen enters the soil, then a bacteria breaks it in 2 then adds hydrogen to it to form ammonia, then the nitrogen is "fixed",but it's still toxic to us,so another type of bacteria takes the ammonia and then puts oxygen in it,which is called nitrification
Pretend Im bacteria,It's my dream
After nitrification plants can now safely absorb the nitrogen in their roots, then when animals eat them, they also receive nitrogen, when we eat animals or plants,we too receive nitrogen. When we die,our bodies will decay which will make the nitrogen go back into the soil, however, when it does, another bacteria breaks up all of the hydrogen and oxygen which is called ammonification, some of the nitrogen from ammonification goes back to the plants and some don't,the ones that don't goes to another bacteria and takes away the oxygen from the nitrogen to put back in the atmosphere which is called denitrification
