The Earth is a round rocky, planet that goes around the Sun. It is made up of three layers: the crust, the mantle, and the core. The crust is the Earth's thin, rocky outer layer and this is where plants, animals, and people live. The mantle covers the core. The core is the center of the Earth and is very hot. The Earth's surface is made up of 70% water and 30% of land. The land is divided into seven large pieces called continents. The Earth has one moon.
The Earth
The Sun is in the center of the solar system and gives life on Earth energy. It is 864,000 miles in diameter and is 109 times greater in size than the Earth. The Sun is made up of lots of gases like oxygen, carbon, 73% hydrogen and 25% helium. The Sun spins once every 25 days, and its poles rotate every 35 days. The Sun is very hot with its core temperature about 27 million degrees Farenheit or 15 million degrees Celsius.
The Sun
The Moon is made up of mostly rock and is about 2,200 miles or 3,476 kilometers in diameter, which is nearly a quarter of the Earth's size. The Moon's surface is made up of mountains, craters and flat planes called seas. The temperature during the day is about 225 degrees Fahrenheit or 107 degrees Celsius, and at night the temperature is about -243 degrees Fahrenheit or -153 degrees Celsius. The Moon is the fifth largest satellite in the solar system and is the second-brightest object in the sky after the Sun. The Moon travels around the Earth and one trip around the Earth takes about 27 days.
