The turn seen after line 12 centers the poem. It is stated that “I might be driven to sell your love for peace,” drawing the allusion that since love is not “all,” she will sell her love for peace. Before this element in the poem, you are led to think that the author's contemplations of love will be concluded with her selling her love, however, she does the exact opposite. Despite the accusations that may be had, the speaker throws in the towel after contemplating. The change in the tone after the turn when it states,” It well may be. I do not think I would,” allows the readers to see what the speaker truly values. Even with all of the arguments and down-talking on love, the speaker comes back around. Even though, she was convinced she may “sell your love,” she no longer thinks that she would. The turn in this poem sets the seal on the idea that love may be powerless, but the lover isn't.
Yet many a man is making friends with death
After the turn in the poem, these two lines are stated. Millay is stating that even after she speaks of the things that love lacks, men still harm themselves because they have an absence of love. By including this line in the poem, Millay leads the idea that there is doubt about her lack of value regarding love. That is why the line is so important because it continues the negative feelings after the turn. The idea of men dying without love shows that love must hold at least a little value. This line in the poem helps build the theme by showing that love may hold more value after all.
The very last line in the sonnet holds so much power, in just a few words. In the first half of the poem, the speaker spoke about how love is not all. The fact that love isn't a sustainable object keeps you alive. Then she decides to end the sonnet with this line. The notion of “love is not all,” is reversed in this line. This line means that for her survival, she doesn't think that she would not barter or sell her love. While speaking to others she defines love as nothing more than an emotion, however, when trying to speak to herself she has no certainty. This helps build the theme of the fact that love does hold some value in her eyes. It may be more valuable than life itself.
Theme: The theme in this sonnet, is that love is powerless, and the aspirations of a lover are strong. Even though it's not a necessity, love still manages to find a way to creep up and provoke great things.
It well may be. I do not think I would.
