  • Joan of Arc "Maid of Orleans", was a peasant girl and the daughter of a tenant farmer. She was born on January 6th, at the time France had long been pulled apart by a acrimonious dispute with England.
  • During this tumultuous time in France, at the age of 13, Joan began to hear voices in her head, which she concluded had been sent by God to give her a quest to save France by banishing its adversaries, and to establish Charles as its true king.
  •  Joan Disguised herself as a male and went to the nearest fortress to askfor soldiers. Joan convinced Charles to let her fight in the way. Herfirst task was to set free Orleans from the English. She commanded a group of soldiersto Orleans.
  • When the King died and no one left to lead them, Joan was left with 300 soldiers to help her fight the rest of the English army. When the town’s mayor saw English troops advancing into French land, he closed the drawbridge, confining Joan outside.
  • After the war, the Catholic Church put Joan in the Trial in Rouen for witchcraft and heresy. The court made 70 allegations against Joan. In May Joan signed a statement, admitting her guilt.
  • Shortly after Joan admitted her guilt, she was condemned to death by burning at the stake. Joan’s family wished that the pope reopen her court case in 1955, 24 years after her death, Pope Callixtus III approve the retrial. Joan was canonized in 1920 16th of May.
