  • I want to hire international students. What to do?
  • Well, don't worry! Let me help you! First, let's see when the international student is still in school. What you need is a paperwork called CPT I-20. Let the international student, Park, show you what it looks like.
  • CPT I-20
  • Curricular Practical Training (CPT) is an employment authorization for F-1 students to work off campus before graduation. Once you offer Park a job and this job meets the CPT requirement, he will be issued a CPT I-20 from the Purdue ISS office. With this paperwork in hand, he is legal to work in the US. while he is in school.
  • I see. But does it cost my company any money to hire Park?
  • No, it is totally free. No employer sponsorship needed. All you need is to offer Park a job and Park will take care of the rest.
  • I see. So hiring Park requires no more paperwork than I hire a US student when he is in school. What about after Park graduates? Can I still hire him?
  • Of course. After Park graduates, all you need is a OPT work authorization. Optional Practical Training (OPT) is an employment authorization for F-1 students to work off campus before or after graduation. Park doesn't even need to have a job offer to apply for OPT. Before hiring Park, all you need is to see the EAD (Employment Authorization Document) card from him. Let Park show you what the EAD card looks like.
  • EAD cardNote: It is a document issued by the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) that provides temporary employment authorization to noncitizens in the United States. This card will state the specific start and end dates for OPT.
  • Hum, Government document? Does my company have to get involved in the application process?
  • No, applying for OPT and obtaining the EAD card is solely Park's responsibility and requires no action from your company. As with the CPT, No employer sponsorship needed. OPT does not cost your company anything.
  • Excellent! I cannot wait to hire Park after he graduates. But how long can I hire him under OPT?
  • Great question! If Park is eligible for OPT, he can have a maximum of 12 months of OPT; If he has earned a degree in a STEM-designated field, he may be eligible for an additional 24 months under the OPT STEM Extension. That is a total of 3 years!
  • Wow, 3 years, no cost to the employer and no sponsorship needed! I am going to hire Park right away!
  • YES!
