Storyboard Description

Forces are a push, a pull or a twist. Forces can speed up or slow down moving objects, they can start or stop objects moving and they can change the direction or shape of an object. Forces are measured in Newtons after Sir Isaac Newton who discovered the force called gravity.

Storyboard Text

  • Magnetism = the force that pulls a metal towards a magnet. Metals that are magnetic are nickel, iron, cobalt and steel (also known as NICS).
  • Gravity = the force that pulls the Earth and planets towards the Sun and keeps objects on the ground.
  • Friction = the force that pushes against the moving object to slow it down.
  • Air resistance = a type of friction between air and another material. The air resistance is slowing the parachute down whereas gravity pulls it down.
  • Buoyancy or upthrust = the force that pushes objects up in a liquid. If buoyancy is bigger than weight it will float. If weight is bigger than buoyancy it will sink.
  • Static electricity = it is an electrical charge from friction of two surfaces moving against each other.
