- Whitney and Rainsford are on the Ship traveling to Rio island as he tells Rainsford about the “Ship-Trap Island” and the mysteries behind it. "OFF THERE TO THE RIGHT - SOMEWHERE - is a large island... The old charts call it 'Ship-Trap Island'. (Page 39)
- RISING ACTION 1
- Person vs. Nature"All he knew was that he was safe from the enemy, the sea.." (Page 42)
- RISING ACTION 2
- Person vs. Person (Rainsford vs. General Zaroff)"Tonight.. we will hunt you and I" (Page 52)
- RISING ACTION 3
- Rainsford falls off the ship and has to swim to get to the shore. "He leaped upon the rail... his pipe, striking a rope, was knocked from his mouth.. He reached too far and has lost his balanced." (Page 42)
- Rainsford follows the footprints that lead to the palatial chateau where he meets Ivan and General Zaroff. "... the print of hunting boots...The largest man had ever seen, a gigantic creature.. Another man was coming down.. I am General Zaroff" (Page 43 and 44)
- General Zaroff begins to explain the hunt of the game to Rainsford and he doesn’t want to do it but he is forced to. "I give him his option, of course. He need not play that game if he does not wish to hunt, I turn him to Ivan.” (Page 50)
