- Hassan is a 11 year old Hazara Shi'a boy. He works as a servant for Amirs family. He resides in their home in Kabul, Afghanistan. He is illiterate and lacks basic education. He is brave and loyal to his best friend. He was raped at the age of 11 after retrieving Amirs kite. Hassan and his father leave Amirs home after being accused of robbery and takes the blame. Years pass and he becomes a father to Sohrab his son and married to Farzana. He becomes educated and teaches his son to read and write. His cause of death was murder.
- Amir is a 12 year old Sunni Muslim boy. He is of high class and lives in Kabul, Afghanistan.
