I am the greatest leader this country has ever seen,
You suck!
This is Russia, 1900. most of the population are poor farmers that cannot support themselves or there family. 85 percent of the Russian population are peasants.
Now it is 1903, the industrialization of Russia is just beginning, much later than the rest of the world. The Peasants in the countryside have heard about this and believe it to be the answer to all their problems. Many move to the city to find work, but instead find only overcrowded streets and famine.
This is Tsar Nicholas the II, he is the leader of Russia and he is not very good at it. Political corruption is everywhere and he is very disliked by the people.
we should give the people food
NO, get out your fired
On January 22nd 1905 the people of St. Petersburg had had enough, they planned a march in opposition to the Tsar to try and demand he listen to their needs, those being food, poor living conditions and various laws. When the people arrived at the palace the Tsar ordered his guards to open fire on the protestors killing over 200.
We have no bullets or shoes!!!were going to die!
The people are angry at the Tsar and his family for this. Rioting and looting break out with many store owners boarding up their windows and leaving town for a couple of days. many people died during this period.
Neal before your emperor! I am amazing!
In response to this the Tsar created the Duma. The duma was supposed to be a ruling body that could make decisions and share the power, In theory this was a good idea however Tsar Nicholas II would just dissolve the entire thing if they made a decision that he didn't like..... the first Duma lasted 10 weeks before it was dissolved
On July 28th, 1914 Russia entered World War 1, the people were not happy with how it was directed and organized. Soldiers often had to go to the front lines without necessary supplies such as boots and bullets.
In 1915 Tsar Nicholas went to the front lines in an attempt to boost morale and prove himself as a good and strong leader...... This failed spectacularly and only proved to the people that he was incompetent and corrupt.
How is this guy in charge??
While the Tsar was at the front lines he left his wife in charge, the people of Russia did not approve of this as she was of German decent. They were even more angry about this decision when they learned that 'the mad monk' Rasputin was to be her advisor.
BOOO!! GET OUT!
I am abdicating my throne.
It's Lenin!!
On March 8th 1917 the factory workers went on strike demanding higher pay. At the same time 25,000 Russian soldiers deserted the war effort and joined in the Protest. On top of these two the women's day march happened at the same time. All of the protestors were calling for the Tsar to resign.
On march 15th Tsar Nicholas was forced to abdicate his throne due to the pressure put on him by the people.
We will create a provisional government!
Uhhhhh ok??
Lenin then returned to Russia after being exiled to Shushenskoye (in southern Russia) and then moving to Switzerland. He then led the Bolshevik party.
The Bolsheviks start to spread their motto of peace, Bread, Land. To the poor and starving peasants this sounds great and they start to believe in the ideals of Lenin and the Bolsheviks. As phones and the internet were not around at the time communication between villages was through word of mouth, the Bolsheviks took advantage of this and had no problem telling one village one thing and the next something completely different, they would say whatever would make the people support them.
On March 14th the Duma tried to form a provisional Government, this was to be run by Georgy Lvov and almost entirely made up of people from the Kadet and Octobrist groups. however they did not manage to accomplish anything meaningful or necessary.
On November 7th the Bolsheviks staged a coup and took over the provisional government asserting themselves as the new leaders, surprisingly there was very little bloodshed. This was surprising because Lenin believed that the only way to truly accomplish his goals was to essentially kill anyone that disagreed with him.
Leon Trotsky negotiated a peace treaty with the Germans, this would officially pull them out of world war 1. The only catch for the Russians was that they would be losing some of there more fertile land to Germany. At first the Bolsheviks were opposed to this, however they soon realized that it was necessary.
I suppose so.....
We need your land in return for this treaty
Lenin believed that even though the Romanov family were no longer in power they could still pose a threat to the Bolsheviks new style of leadership. He had the ex-Tsar along with his entire family and pets exicuted on July 17th 1918.
At this point the Bolsheviks have an incredible amount of support, however they did have there opposition, this would come to be known as the White army. they consisted of anyone that disagreed with Lenin and his new rule. They went to the allied forces and asked for support. at the Beginning of 1919 the French and Italian sent supplies as a form of aid but not the armies that the white army had hoped for.
We need help to kill the communists!!!
The British and the Americans attempted to make peace with both sides of the warring Russian forces and convinced both sides to attend peace talks, the Red army accepted however the anti-communists did not. The communists ended up sending peace proposals to the allies that were rejected. Eventually the French, American and British sent troops into Russia however not many, around a total of 200,000. The French pulled their troops back as it was exceedingly confusing between the Communists, the White army and the new Ukrainian nationalists. In the end the Red army won and continued their reign.
Join the Communists!!
your right lets just do this in Russia
this isn't working
It was after the civil war that the Bolsheviks started trying to spread communism, Lenin and Trotsky soon realized that it was not catching on as much as they would have hoped and soon gave up on there idea of global communism, instead focusing on one country.
