My body has the directions for how to do this as well as everything else about me in my DNA (GENETIC CODE), it's like the blueprint instructions to make me!
Homeostasis
Antifreeze is used in cars to help their radiators not freeze so cars work in the winter. The homemade antifreeze in my body keeps my cells from freezing .
Hello! I'm Woodward, a wood frog from northern Alaska. I'd like to tell you the story of my species and how over time we've accumulated adaptations [EVOLUTION] that have allowed us to live in this variable climate that has a winter 8 months long!
Cells
The weather starts turning colder around here in mid-October. The dropping temperatures signal to my body (STIMULUS) that it's time to start accumulating the compounds from my urine into my blood (RESPONSE).
Metabolism
It's been a long 8 months and now that I'm defrosted, I'm ready for a meal!
Another change that happens in my body is that my liver releases sugar. This sugar will combine with the urine to make a sort of homemade antifreeze in my blood. This solution make me as balanced inside (HOMEOSTASIS) as I can be in these conditions.
Life Goes On!
Cells maintain homeostasis within a certain temperature, but when it gets so cold water is drawn out of them. The antifreeze I make allows enough water to stay in my cells so that they aren't damaged beyond repair.
The Cell is the basic unit of life. As an animal, I have lots of cells (tissues, organs, and organ systems too).
During my inactive time, my heart and breathing will also slow way down so that I will appear dead. But the sugar in my blood is just enough to allow my body enough energy for my survival (METABOLISM). When I awake and defrost I'll search for food!
Once the eggs are fertilized the offspring will increase in size (GROWTH) and go through a series of changes in development, you probably know it as a metamorphosis . The cycle will continue and the wood frog species will too!
Now I'm off to find a mate... (REPRODUCTION) having offspring and keeping population numbers up keeps my species from going extinct!
