During this situation HIPAA was in multiple ways. First, the file clerk opened the lab results of her friend’s daughter without permission. Second, the file clerk told the patients family before the patient. Instead of opening the file, the clerk should’ve filed the lab results. She also should not have told the family about the results until the patient knew. By filing the lab results immediately and not opening them prevents HIPAA breaches.
