Storyboard Text

  • Hello! My name is Stephanie, and today we will walk you through the process of creating each element.
  • Think the periodic table is complicated? Now learn how each element in it was created.
  • The periodic table contains over 100 elements, 91 of which are naturally found on Earth.
  • The major source of the abundances of all elements discovered in the Universe today. A'small star' is any star that isn't large enough to become a supergiant and explode as a supernova; several elements associated with supernovae may be better generated by neutron star mergers.
  • But none of them existed at the time of the Big Bang.
  • The early Universe was closely populated with matter and radiation, and it was so hot and dense that the quarks and gluons present did not separate into individual protons and neutrons, but instead stayed in a quark-gluon plasma.
  • In the early Universe, as matter and antimatter annihilate, the remaining quarks and gluons cool to form stable protons and neutrons.
  • Quarks and gluons cooled to form bound states, protons and neutrons, after the first second.
  • After three minutes, the heated Universe fused the nucleons into helium and a trace of lithium, but no further.
  • Big Bang Nucleosynthesis predicted abundances of helium-4, deuterium, helium-3, and lithium-7.
