Storyboard Text

  • Bilbo Baggins, the main character of this story (and the one seen smoking the cigar), lives in his ordinary town, Hobbiton, and is meeting with Gandalf, a wizard and soon-to-be mentor, about his call to adventure. Gandalf says that he is looking for someone to share in an adventure that he is arranging (page 6). Bilbo, however, refuses the call, saying that, on page 6, his people are plain quiet folk and have no use for adventures. He then tries to convince Gandalf to try his luck somewhere else, such as over The Hill or across The Water. However, throughout the book, Gandalf will be Bilbo's mentor, and later on, encourages Bilbo to accept the call.
  • Ordinary World; Call to Adventure; Refusal of the Call; and Meeting the Mentor:
  • When dwarves, by Gandalf's direction, appear at Bilbo's house, Bilbo panics a bit. Through the forms of a song on pages 14-16, the dwarves explain that the adventure they're recruiting him for is journeying to a mountain to reclaim treasure stolen by a dragon. Finally, Bilbo is convinced to cross the threshold of his plain living into adventure. However, the group faces some tests, allies, enemies, and danger throughout, such as trolls (chapter 2), goblins (chapters 4 and 6), and even the dragon, Smaug, himself (chapters 12-14). It is where Bilbo encounters Smaug that Bilbo's enhanced bravery is shown.
  • Crossing the Threshold; Tests, Allies, and Enemies; and Approach to the Inmost Cave:
  • After a terrifying ordeal, where Bilbo is in the thick of a war and barely escapes (chapter 17), he takes the road back home with Gandalf, now that the dwarves have fulfilled their mission, and, of course, given Bilbo his reward. In the end, his hobbit neighbors are so stunned at the fact that he was alive, it was almost like he was resurrected. They were also auctioning off all of Bilbo's stuff, much to his dismay (pages 274-275). The other hobbits are not too fond of his returning with an elixir of bravery and a liking for adventure. However, Bilbo proceeded to live a long and happy life.
