"Last year 37,000 Americans died from the common flu. Nothing is shut down, life and the economy go on... Think about that. Corona-virus is just over hyped. One day like a miracle – it will disappear. Other countries are suffering more so there's nothing to worry about."
A few months later...
unemployment has already jumped to historic levels, signalling an end to a decade of expansion for one of the world's largest economies.
USA leads the world with the highest number of affected patients, 960,896 cases and 54,265 deaths.
Meanwhile other countries...
Hong Kong, Japan, and Taiwan all have less than 1 death per million; and China, South Korea and Singapore have each under 5 deaths per million. India, too, took decisive actions, with a complete national lockdown when there still had been only 10 deaths in a country of 1.3 billion people. As of today, India has only 289 reported deaths, or 0.2 cases per million, and the hospitals are not jammed with patients as in the US.
rump and other administration officials said the situation was under control and would dissipate in the summer "like a miracle".
The US surpassed virus hotspots in China and Italy.
Doctors and hospitals particularly in areas hardest hit by the pandemic, are scrambling for items essential to help those stricken by the virus.
Country that refused to act at the right time is suffering from a great loss.
What the world thinks about America...
President Donald Trump has failed. The US still lacks even a basic plan for controlling the epidemic and restarting the economy.
Unlike these Asian countries, Trump failed to prepare for the pandemic even after the alarm bells went off. He ignored urgent warning signs. He continued to make light of the high risks, saying repeatedly that everything was under control. America no longer leads the way to finding solution to this pandemic.
Things USA should learn from Asia; take it seriously and act quickly, trace and isolate as well as keep the public well informed.
Final verdict...
Americans will continue to die in large numbers until our country mounts a coherent response to the epidemic.
USA even after having the strongest economy, seems to view the epidemic in political and electoral rather than public health terms.
America's failure is plain for all to see, from medical supply shortages , testing delays to social distancing.
