ISOTOPES, MASS NUMBER, ATOMIC NUMBERCALCULATING AVERAGE ATOMIC MASS OF AN ISOTOPE
WELCOME TO CLASS EVERYONE, TODAY WE WILL LEARN ABOUT ALL THESE TOPICS!
WHAT IS AN ISOTOPE?
AN ISOTOPE IS EACH OF 2 OR MORE VARIATIONS OF THE SAME ELEMENT THAT HAVE VARYING NUMBERS OF NEUTRONS IN THEIR NUCLEI BUT EQUAL NUMBERS OF PROTONS OVERALL. THESE VARIATIONS DIFFER IN RELATIVE ATOMIC MASS BUT NOT IN CHEMICAL PROPERTIES.
MASS NUMBER
THE MASS NUMBER IS THE TOTAL NUMBER OF PROTONS AND NEUTRONS IN A NUCLEUS. IT IS LABELED AS (A)
ATOMIC NUMBER
THE ATOMIC NUMBER IS THE TOTAL NUMBER OF PROTONS IN A NUCLEUS OF AN ATOM. IT IS LABELED AS (Z)
HYPHEN NOTATION
YOU CAN WRITE THE ISOTOPE USING THE HYPHEN NOTATION. THE HYPHEN NOTATION IS WRITTEN AS SYMBOL OF ELEMENT MASS NUMBER OF THE ELEMENT. FOR EXAMPLE C-12
NUCLEAR SYMBOL
THE NUCLEAR SYMBOL IS ANOTHER WAY OF WRITING THE ISOTOPE. THE NUCLEAR SYMBOL IS WRITTEN AS MASS NUMBER ABOVE THE ATOMIC NUMBER WITH THE SYMBOL OF ELEMENT ON THE RIGHT. FOR EXAMPLE 12 ON TOP OF 6 WITH C ON THE RIGHT
