  • "Brother, I advise you to the best. I am no honest/ man if there be any good meaning toward you" (I.ii.170-171).

  • "Thou shouldst not have been old till thou hadst been/ wise" (I.v.42-43).
  • "O, let me not be mad, sweet heaven! Keep/ me in temper; I would not be mad!" (I.v.44-45).
  • Gloucester develops a plan to hear Edgar's ideas first hand. He wants Edmund to confront Edgar of his intentions while he is listening in secret. After Edmund's conversation with Gloucester, Edgar enters. To avoid being confronted with his lies directly in front of his father, Edmund tells his half-brother that Gloucester is outraged with him, and it would be best to vanish until he has calmed down.
  • Oswald criticizes Lear's fool, causing Lear to feel enraged and strike Oswald. Seeking to provoke confrontation, Goneril instructs Oswald to be negligent toward the King and his knights, with the hopes that he will turn away from staying at her residence. Lear declares that he will stay with Regan, however, Goneril believes that she will treat him with the same coldness and disrespect.
  • The fool reminds King Lear of his mistakes, and as he realizes what has happened to him, he begins to feel the approach of madness.
