In the 20th century, humans progressed like never before.
Well you see...
Dad, why do we live here?
Humanity progressed in the 20th and 21st centuries like never before. However, our progress came at the cost of Climate Change. Instead of fortifying coasts, building renewable energy plants, and finding alternative food sources, governments vehemently opposed change.
We chose to do nothing, and we payed the price. Storms that once were once in a lifetime became common. Tens of thousands drowned in the coastal cities.I wasn't one of those as I lived far inland.
In other places, droughts grew the deserts. Plagues ravaged the surrounding communities due to their lack of sanitation. The Sahara would cover most of central Africa and the Gobi would encompass much of Mongolia. Despite this, our leaders assuaged the population, and still did nothing. People were afraid that the government would still do nothing, and many like me built places so we could stay there in case of trouble.
I was lucky not to experience this. My group was afraid that the war was still going on, so we stayed in our shelter.
With our dwindling resources, instead relinquishing our instincts and working together for the survival of our species, we did what we always did. We fought. We started wars over things that would have been commonplace, food, water and fuel. Entire cities erupted in mushroom clouds and millions died.I didn't live in a big city, so this I avoided.
These wars were like nothing seen in the past. The days of Blitzkriegs running through continents were over. Instead, we used our most potent weapons, with little hesitation, we used our nuclear weapons.
There wasn't enough space in our bunker, so I pushed someone out.
Society began breaking down. Government factions began starting coups, and countries declared martial law. Riots and demonstrations became common, and often deadly. I remember listening to the radio, reverberating this news across us and the world.
