In the 20th century, humans progressed like never before.
Humanity progressed in the 20th and 21st centuries like never before. But progress involved things like pumping CO2 into the atmosphere. We were warned about climate change and all the effects it would cause.
But it we ignored it, and we payed the price. Storms that once were once in a lifetime became common. Tens of thousands drowned in the coastal cities.
In other places, droughts grew the deserts. Plagues ravaged the surrounding communities due to their lack of sanitation. The Sahara would cover most of central Africa and the Gobi would encompass much of Mongolia.
With the dwindling resources, we did what we always did. We fought. We started wars over things that would have been commonplace, food, water and fuel. Entire cities erupted in mushroom clouds and millions died.
These wars were like nothing seen in the past. The days of Blitzkriegs running through continents were over. Instead, we used our most potent weapons, with little hesitation, we used our nuclear weapons.
Society began breaking down. Government factions began starting coups, and countries declared martial law. Riots and demonstrations became common, and often deadly.
